Pediatric Eye Exam Q & A

When should I schedule a pediatric eye exam?

Like adults, kids need routine comprehensive eye exams to check for vision changes and assess eye health. Your pediatrician may check your child’s vision during their annual wellness exam, but this vision test may not detect all vision problems or eye conditions.

Your child should have their first pediatric eye exam at six months of age, then again at age 3 and age 5 or 6. School-aged children should have a pediatric eye exam every two years.

If your child has a vision problem or an eye condition, they may need a pediatric eye exam every year.

What happens during a pediatric eye exam?

Dr. Levy is an expert in pediatric eye exams. She understands the concern and fears children have when they come in to get their eyes checked.

To keep things quick, comfortable, and fun, Dr. Levy uses state-of-the-art optometry tools to measure your child’s vision and assess eye health. During your child’s pediatric eye exam, Dr. Levy:

  • Reviews your child’s medical and vision history

  • Checks visual acuity

  • Assesses eye muscle function

  • Evaluates depth perception

  • Performs retinoscopy to assess vision and eyeglass prescription needs

  • Conducts a dilated eye exam

Rhody Eye Care also has state-of-the-art platforms for visual evoked potential (measures entire vision system) and pattern electroretinogram (assess central retinal function).

After the pediatric eye exam, Dr. Levy talks to you about your child’s vision and eye health, and provides recommendations, which may include a prescription for vision correction. Rhody Eye Care offers designer and custom-made frames for glasses.

What are special pediatric eye exam services?

In addition to providing your child with corrective eyewear to improve vision, Dr. Levy also specializes in the diagnosis and management of many vision and eye conditions that affect children. These conditions include:

  • Strabismus

  • Vision-related learning disabilities

  • Nearsightedness (myopia)

  • Convergence insufficiency

  • Amblyopia

To treat these low vision issues, Dr. Levy provides vision therapy to improve eye tracking, focusing, teaming, and perceptual skills. For vision therapy, Dr. Levy schedules weekly in-office visits and provides a therapy plan for you to implement at home.

Vision therapy at Rhody Eye Care may improve your child’s vision, learning, and confidence.
